If you are getting ready to attend college and need a no cosigner student loan, and you’ve talked to other college students about it, you may have heard many horror stories concerning the application processes for financial aid. There are some very important first steps in getting federal student aid that you need to be aware of before getting student loans with no cosigner involved in your transaction, and the sooner you start taking these steps, the better off you will be. You will save yourself time by working smartly and may need smaller student loans then you originally intended, or none at all.
As soon as possible, you need to use FAFSA4caster. This tool will tell you a great deal of information before you even start applying for student aid, such as the amount of money you will need to attend college and what federal student aid is available for you to apply to. Print out this information, and take it with you to your high school counselor’s office or financial aid office at the school that you will attend so that your counselor can discuss the results with you as soon as possible, and both of you are more aware of the next first steps in getting federal student aid that you need to take. If you needed a no cosigner student loan, the FAFSA may offer you one that’s perfect for you.
Ask your high school counselor or financial aid officer about any scholarships that you may be eligible for, and apply for those scholarships as soon as possible, paying careful attention to the requirements for applying and the deadlines. With scholarships, there are never any grace periods for applying. This is usually done before you ever start applying for federal student aid. Be sure to ask about local scholarships that is often overlooked.
Check with any organizations or unions that you or your parents are members of to determine whether they have scholarships or financial aid available for your education. Also check with your church. Often, you won’t know about these financial aid opportunities unless you ask about them.
The next most important first steps in getting federal student aid are to fill out and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. This can be done online, but you need to obtain a PIN number first, from www.pin.ed.gov before filling out the FAFSA application. You will need your social security number, your income tax documents (or your parents), and other requested information to fill out this form. You will not get any federal student aid unless this is submitted first.
Once that form is submitted, you will receive a Student Aid Report. This report will have your EFC, or Expected Family Contribution. Your school should receive a copy as well, and with this information, they will put together a financial aid package for you, which will contain the other applications that you need to fill out for federal no cosigner student loans and grants that your EFC make you eligible for.
Overall, the process of getting help to pay for your education really isn’t as tedious as it sounds. It just takes a little bit of your time, and some thought, and of course, you need to take the right first steps in getting federal student aid. If you skip any steps, you may be denied aid, or your financial aid may be delayed or even reduced. Read all forms that you fill out carefully, making sure that all information is correct before you submit them, and check to make sure that all information on your SAR is also correct when you receive it. If you do all of the above you will know what kind of no cosigner student loan you qualify for and how much. You may even be offered Federal Grants – which do not have to be paid back. If you’re really fortunate you may find that you don’t need any large student loans with no cosigner whatsoever.
